The island of Manhattan is a relatively small place in terms of the land it covers. It is 2.3 miles wide at its widest point. It is only 0.8 mile wide at its narrowest point. It is just under 13-5 miles long. All of Manhattan occupies only 22 square miles. Manhattan is the place most people mean when they say New York City. New York City actually consists of five counties, also called boroughs. In addition to Manhattan, they are the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. Staten Island and Manhattan are both islands. Queens and Brooklyn are both on the western end of Long Island.

Manhattan is separated from the Bronx by the Harlem River. The Hudson River flows south down the west sides of the Bronx and Manhattan and separates New York from the state of New Jersey. The East River (which is actually a strait) flows along the east sides of the Bronx and Manhattan. The five boroughs and New Jersey are linked by tunnels, bridges, and ferries.
