One of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem was ranked seventh and described as having “profound cultural and historical significance.” Readers of the popular travel website Trip Advisor, that provides extensive and in depth travel information on destinations all around the globe have ranked Jerusalem among their Top 10 sightseeing and culture destinations in the world, above Venice, Istanbul, and London.
“Plan on seeing the major sights,” the website suggests, “but also leave plenty of time to walk through the streets and simply immerse yourself in the daily life of such an ancient and revered place.”
Jerusalem attracts over two million tourists a year, with about 80% of all tourists visiting the holy city. The city also contains within it the most visited sites in Israel, including the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Via Dolorosa, Yad Vashem and the Mount of Olives.
In an annual poll of its online readers published earlier this week, the capital was ranked 17th in the ‘World’s Best Cities – Overall’ list, ahead of popular destinations such as Barcelona, Paris and London. Among the cities in the Middle East, Jerusalem was ranked third (behind Cape Town and Fez, Morocco).
